Online media companies who want to be portals should remember that what makes a portal valuable to a user is it's function as an 'enabler'. Locking users into a particular 'platrom' is not only arrogant it's also restrictive.

If they (the media companies) want to get a return for their often excessive investments in these acqusitions they need to think long and hard before doing anything to alter the 'magic' that made the portal successful in the first place.

Hi Michael, nice to meet you again at the Slattery breakfast this morning.

And nice piece. I agree with you and playing with Zapr in a space more crowded with competitors than customers it's worth thinking about.

We say we're all about focus, but more than 20% of our audience have asked for chat. Like most things strategy is defined by what you do and don't do.

I think the Flickr API debate is an interesting adjunct to this. "Do no evil" is ok for some spaces, but Google has very little community. Maybe that's what they need. I wonder if Flickrs credo is "Encourage everyone to hug!"
