The story of the long tail by Chris Anderson (interesting blog here) http://longtail.typepad.com/the_long_tail/

Embracing millions of markets of dozens of well aligned groups goes against the established meme of mega hit wonders. We all love super hits, but the true money exists in complete libraries of works online and distributed on demand as the users want them. Sad that the cutting edge is always paved by visionaries who often get copied or swallowed up by the wallmarts and amazons of the world. Leaves me scratching my head understanding that it won't be technology that wins, it won't be people or ideas, it will be your ability to listen to the market and adapt quickly to meet the needs.

Let's hear it for the little guys, may they (we) be able to move faster, and always keep ahead.

Bigger than this is the new demand for market wide synchronous release. With the mindset that Piracy is what is killing entertainment, there is a growing demand that content be released same day theatricaly and via rental/sales outlet.

Soderbergh is one of the biggest names behind the idea.

What is being offered is that this minimises the risk of pirates getting the DVD out before the majors do.

Underlying this is Majors playing fast and loose with accounting, factoring in losses internationaly, with line items being thrown in for piracy losses.

Bottom line is, the film maker makes less, the studio doesn't pay out as much in point based revenue, so in principle, makes money by not giving it away.

Cool, ehhh?
